Retirement Ceremony
The Town Clerk, Dianne White, retired on March 31. On Thursday, April 6, 2017 at 5:30 p.m., the Town hosted a reception in the Gallery at Town Hall. Council members and Town employees were in attendance. Mrs. White was presented with a gift from Town employees as well as a Thank You/Retirement plaque from the Town.

Town Council
The Butner Town Council met on Thursday, April 6, 2017. Chief Roberts introduced new Butner Public Safety Officer, Tyrone Terry. Officer Terry brings with him experience in both fire and police. Approval was given to advertise the 75th Camp Butner Celebration on September 23, 2017 in Our State Magazine. Council approved the low bid to print t-shirts which will be sold during Memorial Day, Chicken Pickin’ and Fireworks events. Council declared 35 body armor vests surplus and authorized their donation to the non-profit Armor of God Project. Since 2009, Armor of God Project has been issuing gear to law enforcement personnel that do not have access to body armor. The Town assumes no liability for the vests. Council voted to authorize Custom Docks to construct a pedestrian pier and canoe launch at Lake Holt with completion projected by June 30, 2017. Council authorized to execute a contract with AECOM, not to exceed $70,000.00, for Stormwater System Management. An increase in the original contract with Kimley-Horn Engineers was also approved for the East Lyon Station Road Greenway Extension. Originally approved in May 2016, NCDOT approvals delayed the project. The cost increased by $1,408.00.

Reports/Council Comments: Town Manager Marrow noted that money will be included in the FY2017-18 budget to replace residential street lights with LED lights at a cost of approximately $11,200.00. Work on the budget has begun with the next scheduled Finance Committee Meeting on April 17th at 5:30 p.m. at Town Hall. Council member Branch thanked the public for attending the second annual International Food Festival. Mr. Branch also discussed an opportunity to volunteer for the Chicken Pickin’ (visit www.bcaserves.org). Council member Birdsong recognized the Leadership Granville Program. Mr. Birdsong recently completed the Chamber program encompassing business, industry, government, and non-profit entities in Granville County. He also commented on meeting with State elected officials and Department Secretaries during the recent Town Hall Day sponsored by the NC League of Municipalities. Mayor Cates announced the upcoming Community Watch Meeting on April 13 at Town Hall and Beautify Butner on Saturday, April 22 beginning at 8:00 a.m. at Gazebo Park.

Town Council will meet in Special Session on Monday, April 17, 2017 at 5:30 p.m. at Town Hall. The purpose of the meeting is to consider a paving contract for the Wynngate subdivision. Following the Special Meeting, the Finance Committee will meet to work on the FY2017-18 budget.

Website Subcommittee
The Website Subcommittee will meet on Thursday, April 13, 2017 at 5:30 p.m. at Town Hall.

Planning Board
The Planning Board will not meet this month.

Board of Adjustment
The Board of Adjustment will meet on Thursday, April 27, 2017 on or about 7:00 p.m. at Town Hall. The purpose of the meeting is to hold a public hearing for SUP-17-01. The Rosemyr Corporation has requested a Special Use Permit for a gun shop in an existing building zoned Neighborhood Business (NB). A gun shop is not a use listed in the Table of Permitted Uses in the Land Development Ordinance (LDO), but was interpreted to be most similar to a Type II Retail or Service Use. The property is located at 209 West C Street and is specifically identified by MAP Numbers 0876-0906-9944 and 0876-0906-8898.
