Butner Town Council met on June 7, 2018. Winners of the Memorial Day Essay Contest were recognized: Elizabeth Chu (1st), Regan Bowman (2nd) and Mackenzie Roy (3rd). The students read their essays during the Butner Memorial Day Ceremony and again at the June Council Meeting. Winners receive a cash prize, certificate and Butner pin. BPS Chief Roberts presented Sgt. Kolby Ruby with his Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate. The certificate is based on both education and experience. The Landscape Beautification Committee awarded Judy and Richard Gidwitz of 804 East E Street as June’s Yard of the Month Winner. A sign will be placed in their yard in the month of June. Mayor Turner and Manager Marrow presented Planning Director Hodges with a plaque for her 10 years of service to the Town. Her last day of employment is June 25. Later in the meeting, she expressed her gratitude for working in Butner and helping the Town grow. Architect HagarSmith presented the remodeling design for old Fire Station #3. The next step is bidding the construction. The remodeled building will include an updated exterior, new roof, BPS training facility, a small kitchenette, and fitness room.
Following a public hearing, Council adopted the Budget for Fiscal Year 2018-19. The tax rate will remain the same at $0.665 per $100 valuation. Two changes to the Butner Land Development Ordinance were adopted following their respective public hearings. The ordinance now defines microbreweries and distilleries. The number of parking spaces required for a golf driving range was reduced from 3 to 1. A golf driving range is still planned for East Lyon Station Road. A new sidewalk along Central Avenue between B and D Streets is currently under construction. Council voted to get formal bids to continue the sidewalk from D Street to Gazebo Park and/or from D Street to E Street.
Due to the July Regular Meeting falling on July 5, the day after the holiday, Council moved the Regular Meeting date to Thursday, July 12. The Planning Board Meeting will move to July 19.
Butner Public Safety (BPS) will hold its monthly Community Watch Meeting on Thursday, June 14 at 6:00 p.m. in the Camp Butner Room at Town Hall. The public is encouraged to attend to learn vital information pertaining to the safety of their neighborhoods. Information such as recent arrests, crimes and safety concerns are presented to the public during each meeting. BPS also accepts any and all information so that they can be addressed and/or resolved.
The Board will meet on Thursday, June 14 at 7:00 p.m. in the Council Meeting Room at Town Hall. The agenda includes a text amendment related to the number of entrances required for subdivisions prior to final platting and permitting; rezoning approximately 60 acres off WB Clark Road from Suburban Residential (RS) to Conditional District Planned Unit Development (CD-PUD); and review of the Preliminary Plat for Fleming Farm – Phase I.
