The Butner Town Council met on December 6 for their Regular Monthly meeting. The Falls Lake Academy Lady Firebirds Varsity Volleyball Team was recongized for their 2018 NCHSAA 1A State Championship. Coaches and players stood while Mayor Turner read and presented them with a proclamation for the team’s accomplishments. Councilmember McKellar acknowledged the Veterans Day Essay Contest Winners and presented them with a certificate and the Town of Butner Lapel Pin. The winners were as follows: First Place – Alexis Borden; Second Place – Carter Scott; and, Third Place – Nyah Gifford. The students read their essays, which were originally read during the November 12, 2018 Veterans Day Ceremony. All winners also received a cash reward.
Several appointments were made for council members and staff to represent Butner on various Boards and Committees as follows: Granville County Tourism Development Authority (TDA) – Councilmember Vickie Smoak; Granville County Greenways Advisory Council (GAC) – Councilmember Jimmy Gooch; South Granville Water and Sewer Authority (SGWASA) – Councilmember Bill Birdsong; Kerr-Tar Council of Government Rural Planning Organization’s (RPO) Technical Coordinating Committee (TCC) – Planning & Recreation Director Mike Ciriello; and, Kerr-Tar Council of Government RPO Technical Advisory Committee Alternate (TAC) – Mike Ciriello.
Council adopted a Shared Leave Policy that will allow employees the opportunity to help a coworker on FMLA by allowing the donation of vacation leave. Council transferred a one-acre parcel adjacent to the Cedar Glade Preserve on B Street to the NC Plant Conservation Program. The parcel will become part of the Preserve and managed by the Plant Conservation Program.
Town Manager Marrow reported that bids for the Old Fire Station Renovation are due on Thursday, December 13th. The project will start following the approval of a contract. RiceWrap should be open in January. Planning Director Ciriello reported that staff held a second workshop for Planning Board and Town Council in November on the subject of Transportation Planning and its impact on development and fiscal health. He also participated in a conference call for orientation to the NC League of Municipalities Broadband Task Force. Staff is working on potential code changes that will be implemented following completion of the 2030 Comprehensive Plan, investigating possible EPA Brownfield Assessment Grants, and has submitted two intersections for further study by the NCDOT in advance of the next funding cycle. It was reported that beginning in January, SGWASA will start their regular monthly meetings at 6:00 PM instead of 7:00 PM.
The Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee and Town Staff put on another successful Pictures with Santa event this year at Gazebo Park on Friday, November 30th. We had a great turn out of children and families taking their picture with Santa and receiving their choice of frame and complimentary toys and goodies to take home.
On Thursday, December 13th, the Town hosted the Annual Senior Christmas Social at the Sports Arena. This event is for the people who walk at the Sports Arena in the mornings, seniors and all ages. The Town provides breakfast for these individuals who are choosing a consistent and healthier lifestyle by walking in the mornings. This year, breakfast came from Biscuitville along with fruit and pastry items, coffee and juice. If you are interested in this event, you do not have to be a senior but you must be a walker. The Sports Arena is open 5:00-9:00 AM Monday-Friday for our walkers.
The Butner Planning Board will not meet this month.
Butner Public Safety’s Community Watch will meet on Thursday, December 13th at 6:00 PM in the Camp Butner Room at Town Hall.
The Finance Committee meeting scheduled for Thursday, December 13th was cancelled.
