Mayor Cates, originally from Creedmoor, has lived in Butner for 10 years. She has served on the council for 8 years. Ms. Cates studied biology, chemistry, leadership, and organizational systems. She attended Wake Technical Community College, North Carolina Central University, North Carolina State University, and the Leadership Program at Durham VA Medical Center. Ms. Cates served on the Granville Greenway Advisory Council (Chair), Landscape & Beautification Committee (Chair) and Restoration Advisory Board (RAB) (Co-chair) until recently elected Mayor in 2015.
Christene Emory, Mayor Pro Tem

Ms. Emory was born in Madison County, NC and has lived in Butner for over 40 years. She has served on the Council for five years. Her current term expires in 2017. Ms. Emory studied home economics, social studies, french, nursing, and received teacher’s training. She received a BS from East Tennessee State University, a Master of Science from North Carolina State University and was certified as a Registered Nurse by Duke University. She is employed part-time by Central Regional Hospital. Ms. Emory serves on the following committees: Landscape & Beautification, BPS Fireman’s Fund, South Granville Exchange Club, NCRGEA (Vice President), and the Butner Church Council (Chair).

Mr. Birdsong has been a resident of Butner for six years. He was elected in 2015 and his term will expire in 2019. Mr. Birdsong earned an undergraduate degree in Engineering from the University of South Florida and a graduate degree in Business from Georgia Southwestern State University. His career spanned many years and was centered in manufacturing. He worked in both engineering and operations. Currently retired, Mr. Birdsong lives here with his wife, who is also retired. Mr. Birdsong serves on the Homeowners Association Board (HOA) for Butner’s largest residential development, Wynngate.
Michel D. Branch

Mr. Branch has lived in Butner for more than 7 years and has served on the Council for three years. He was reappointed to the Council in 2015. Mr. Branch received an Associates degree in Computer Science with a minor in Business from Montgomery College in Takoma Park, MD. He received a BA in Political Science with a minor in Information Science from the University of Pittsburgh, PA. He is employed by UNC School of Medicine as an Application Analyst. Mr. Branch serves on the following committees: Community Building, Parks & Recreation Advisory Committee and Butner Community Association (BCA).
Linda R. Jordon

Mrs. Jordon was born in Palmer Springs, VA and has lived in Butner for over 20 years. She has served on the Council for 10 years. Her current term expires in 2017. Mrs. Jordon studied business administration, organizational change and leadership. She attended North Carolina A&T State University and received a BA from North Carolina Wesleyan College. She received a Master of Science from Pfeiffer University and will receive a Doctorate of Philosophy from the University of the Rockies in 2016. Mrs. Jordon serves on the following committees: Community Building, Personnel, SGWASA, Human Relations Council, and the Kerr-Tar Regional Council of Governments.

Mr. McKellar was born in Dillon County, SC and lived in Bladen and Robeson counties. He has lived in Butner for 42 years. He has served on the Council for six years and his current term expires in 2019. Mr. McKellar received a BS in Pharmacy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is retired as a self-employed pharmacist and is still a registered pharmacist. Mr. McKellar serves on the following committees: Finance, Community Building, Upper Neuse River Basin Association (UNRBA) Board of Directors, and planning committees for Memorial Day and Veterans Day events. He also serves as a member of the Murdoch Center Human Rights Committee.

Mrs. Smoak was born and raised in Person County, NC and has lived in Butner for 35 years. She received a BS in Social Work from East Carolina University and retired from Murdoch Center having worked in positions including Social Work, Unit Manager and Division Director. Mrs. Smoak was elected in 2015 and her term expires in 2019. She serves on the following committees: Landscape & Beautification Committee, Butner Church Council, Granville Greenways Advisory Council (GGAC), and the Granville County Adult Care Home Advisory Committee.
