Mayor Cates has lived in Butner for ten years. She is a life long resident of Granville County and a graduate of South Granville High School with Creedmoor as her hometown. She has served eight years on the Council. The first staggered terms were set in 2013 with Ms. Cates receiving the highest number of votes and one of three four-year terms. Until being elected Mayor, Ms. Cates served as Chair on the Granville Greenway Advisory Council, Chair of the Landscape Beautification Committee and member of the Finance Committee. Ms. Cates studied biology, chemistry, leadership, and organizational systems. She has attended Wake Technical Community College, North Carolina Central University, North Carolina State University, and the Leadership Program at Durham VA Medical Center.
Ms. Cates serves on the South Granville Water and Sewer Authority (SGWASA) Board and is Co-Chair for the Restoration Advisory Board (RAB). She attends town committee meetings including Community Watch, sponsored by Butner Public Safety.
She believes a leader must have a vision, act as an ambassador for her community and have a strong resolve to follow through to get things done. Her background as a Medical Technologist provides an analytical thought process to ask questions and seek possible solutions from different views. Her priorities include maintaining our small town charm, protecting our environment, providing good jobs through effective economic development, and continuing to build strong relationships with local and regional governments.
