The Town of Butner has a council-manager form of government. The Town Council is non-partisan and consists of a Mayor and six (6) members all at large. The Mayor serves two year terms and council members serve four year terms. All Council members have an equal vote and the Mayor only votes in the event of a tie.

The Town Council is the legislative and policy-making body for Butner and is the final authority on most matters related to the Town. The Council is responsible for appointing the Town Manager, Town Attorney, Town Clerk, and members of various boards and commissions; enacting ordinances and resolutions; adopting the annual budget; and, authorizing contracts on the Town’s behalf. In the application and enforcement of the Land Development Ordinance, the Council is the approving authority for the following: text amendments, zoning map amendments (rezonings), conditional zoning district classifications, major subdivision preliminary and final plats, and establishment of vested rights.

Town Council meets each month on the first Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Town Hall.
